About This Museum

熊本県上益城郡の、小高い丘の上にある一軒家の陶器館です。室内には、熊本の伝統陶器である小代焼の作品が、年代順に並んでいます。十一月になると、窓の外のモミジが真っ赤に染まり、その光が障子を通して室内に差し込みます。畳の上に座って展示を見ると、陶器の釉薬の小さなひび割れまでよく見えます。管理人は元陶芸家で、時々作業部屋でろくろを回しています。見学者がいても無関心な様子ですが、質問をすると、釉薬の配合や焼き方について、静かに詳しく教えてくれます。入館料400円は、出口の陶製の壺に入れます。

A one-room pottery museum atop a small hill in Kamimashiki, Kumamoto. Works of Shodai-yaki, Kumamoto's traditional pottery, line the shelves in chronological order. In November, maple trees outside the window turn deep red, filtering crimson light through the shoji screens into the room. Sitting on the tatami to view the displays, you can see every tiny crack in the pottery glazes. The caretaker is a former potter who sometimes works the wheel in his studio. He seems indifferent to visitors, but if you ask, he will quietly explain glaze recipes and firing techniques in detail. The 400-yen admission goes in a ceramic jar at the exit.
