About This Museum

京都府北部、竹林に囲まれた小さな一軒家の博物館です。竹編みの籠や、竹製の農具、漁具が展示されています。窓の外には、風に揺れる竹林が広がり、その音が室内に静かに響きます。室内は畳と板張りの半々で、畳の上には大きな竹籠が置かれ、中に小さな道具が入っています。管理人は竹細工の職人で、時々作業台で細い竹ひごを編んでいます。見学客がいても顔を上げず、黙々と手を動かしています。でも、質問をすると、竹の種類や編み方を丁寧に教えてくれます。入館料300円は、出口の箱に入れます。春先は、竹の新芽が窓の外に顔を出します。

A small house museum in northern Kyoto, surrounded by bamboo groves. Displays bamboo-woven baskets, bamboo farm tools, and fishing equipment. Outside the window, a bamboo forest sways in the wind, its sound quietly echoing inside. The room is half tatami and half wooden floor; large bamboo baskets sit on the tatami, filled with small implements. The caretaker is a bamboo craftsman who sometimes weaves thin bamboo strips at his workbench. He keeps his head down, working silently even when visitors are present. But if you ask a question, he will carefully explain the types of bamboo and weaving techniques. The 300-yen admission goes in a box at the exit. In early spring, bamboo shoots peek up outside the window.
