About This Museum

長野県上田市の、小さな川沿いに建つ二部屋の紡績館です。元々は蚕を飼っていた家屋で、今は古い紡績機や織機、藍染めの布が展示されています。六月の雨の日には、窓硝子に雨粒がついて、室内の光がぼんやりと柔らかくなります。旧い紡績機の前には小さな椅子が置いてあり、そこに座って展示を見ると、機械の歯車の細かい彫りがよく見えます。藍染めの布は、年月とともに色が褪せて、最初の濃い藍から薄い水色へと変化しています。管理人のおばあさんは、週に三回だけ来て、窓を開けて換気をします。彼女は何も言わず、ただ静かに座って、展示品を見つめています。入館料は300円で、入口の木箱に入れます。

A two-room textile museum along a small river in Ueda, Nagano. Originally a house for raising silkworms, it now displays old spinning machines, looms, and indigo-dyed fabric. On rainy days in June, raindrops cling to the windowpanes, softening the indoor light into a hazy glow. A small chair sits in front of an old spinning machine; from there you can see the fine carvings on the gears. The indigo fabric has faded over the years, shifting from deep blue to pale water-blue. An elderly woman caretaker comes three times a week to open the windows for ventilation. She says nothing, just sits quietly gazing at the exhibits. Admission is 300 yen, placed in a wooden box at the entrance.
